Proof like three dollar gold coins are extremely rare and seldom seen, constituting as they do a tiny minority of the certified population. While some issues from the 1870s forward show Proof like of up to 1% or 2%, some early issues in the series show Proof like pieces forming only a small fraction of a percent of the Mint State pieces certified. In the case of the 1874, somewhat less than 1% of the pieces have earned the Proof like designation. In fact, Including this example, only 3 coins have earned a PL designation. This piece boasts lovely yellow-gold surfaces with attractive black-on-gold contrast. A few faint field abrasions appear consistent with the Select grade.
