Description

Alberto Giacometti ALS "there's no more ink in the inkwell"

Alberto Giacometti autograph letter signed, composed on 29 October 1943 from Stampa, Switzerland, with unusual content regarding his creative process at a time when he was refining his sculptural style to reflect his style of thin, elongated figures. He writes in black fountain pen to his childhood friend Alice Hirschfeld.  Two page letter on a sheet measuring 7" x 11.25". Folds, else near fine condition.

Giacometti's letter, translated from French, in full, "Stampa, Oct. 29, 1943 / Dear Alice / Thank you for you latest letter and also for the others, and forgive me for not responding earlier. Time passes too quickly; here we are 15 days at Stampa already, after this I'll be going to Zurich for a little bit, but I think you will have already left by then, otherwise I will be very happy to meet with you. Will you go to Lausanne afterward? I will return to Geneva again next month. My work is moving along very slowly. I was in the workshop all day, making and unmaking the same things, and tomorrow it will begin again. If only I could get out of there quickly and think of other things. It's all I do, no walks, and in the evening I read whatever and go to sleep. This is what my life has been reduced to, and there's no more ink in the inkwell. It's dark, I'm not bored and I'm not in a good mood this evening, this all drags on and I'm late on everything, as if my feet are stuck in molasses.

The only thing I can think about is getting out, nothing else in my head and quite difficult to write anything. I hope I will be better when I see you again. / I'm going to have dinner (that, of course, always brings me pleasure), I'll go to the bistro to read the newspaper, I'll work a little bit, and I'll wait for tomorrow. / And now I am being called to go to the spring to get water. / See you soon, very affectionately / Alberto / Sorry for this letter, impossible to do any better this evening. I barely dare to send it to you."

A very rare letter by the artist.
