Description
Near East, Persia / Iran, Qajar Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A large and vibrant woven velvet panel in hues of fuchsia, orange, green, white, black, and blue. The center features birds, flowers, abstract diamond shapes, and other geometric motifs. This area is framed by several concentric borders of repeating geometric shapes. This is a luxurious textile, and the velvet threads make for a shimmery appearance. Due to the cost of production, pleasing texture, and glimmering appearance, velvet was traditionally associated with royalty. Size: 110.25" L x 43.75" W (280 cm x 111.1 cm)
The Ottoman empire was perfectly situated along the Silk Road and became renowned for its stunning weaving which often incorporated silk and even metallic threads.
