Description
Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A beautiful brass censer comprised of an elaborate bowl and a tripod pedestal. The intricate bowl displays a pointed bottom and piriform body that perfectly fits onto the ring-form top of the base. A pointed front flap bearing the relief image of Shesha, the 7-headed serpent who serves as king of all Nagas, is featured at the front of the vessel, while an elongated back flap rises from the back, tapering and curving outwards at the top. Both flaps were intended to control the fire, which would burn at the base of the bowl. A twisted border surrounds the mouth of the bowl, and 3 horizontal registers of tab-shapes embellish the exterior of its base. The pedestal is equally sophisticated, exhibiting 3 slender feet, each showing avian heads at their bases and then curving upwards once hitting the ground to display the heads of Shesha. The top of the pedestal presents a gorgeous petaloid motif. Size: 3.625" W x 9.5" H (9.2 cm x 24.1 cm)
