William Joseph "Bill" Freeman (American, 1927-2012), oil on canvas, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful Bill Freeman landscape painting of the American West, set in early autumn as demonstrated by the golden yellow leaves of the trees shimmering in the sunlight. Just beyond are rock faces of the mountains nestled amidst tall conifers. Freeman used color and light to create drama in nature, as the brilliant yellows and oranges of the tree leaves contrast with the cool mauves of the rock faces and the deep forest greens of the conifers. Freeman appreciated the picturesque as well as the sublime power of nature, and his loose brushwork and command of the palette knife as seen in this composition reflected the vitality of the natural environment. Bill Freeman grew up in West Texas on a farm just outside of El Paso. Interestingly, he worked as a horse wrangler, fought forest fires for the U.S. Forest Service, and was a field researcher and guide for the Arizona Game and Fish Department for twelve years in Arizona, Wyoming, and New Mexico prior to becoming an artist. It was not until the age of thirty that Freeman decided to become an artist specializing in Western landscapes. Today he is considered a pioneer of Western art centered on such storied locales as Scottsdale, Arizona and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
