Item Details
Description
  • Title: Pair Ming Chinese Turquoise Candlestick Prickets c 16th-17th century
  • Size: 6 ½” (16.5 cm) tall x 4 ½” (11.4 cm) long x 2 5/8” (6.7 cm) wide.
  • Description: A pair of very old turquoise and yellow glazed candlestick prickets molded in the shape of Buddhist lions. The candlesticks have holes where the metal pricket would have been, and wells to catch the wax. They are glazed with a thin and runny turquoise glaze that does not cover the entire figure. There is also a thin yellowish glaze at the mouth of each figure. Their bases and lower bodies were not glazed. The clay body is a buff reddish color. There was a slip coating on the lower unglazed body. MEASUREMENTS 6 ½” (16.5 cm) tall x 4 ½” (11.4 cm) long x 2 5/8” (6.7 cm) wide. Weighs 2 lbs 0.8 oz (930 g) CONDITION They both have glaze losses throughout on the bodies. There is loss to areas of the slip glaze on the lower body. The losses are most pronounced on the lower portions of the body around the feet of the fu lions, as well along the base. It is very possible that some of those areas were never fully glazed because the glaze appears to have a natural edge rather than being irregular chipped as is the case of the glaze losses on the upper body. There are a few chips along the edge of the base. An ancient pair of Chinese ceramics to add age and substance to the home décor. These have seen so much history. A great addition to a collection.
