Title: Mid-19th C Chinese Rose Medallion Large PlatterSize: 16 ½” (41.9 cm) x 13 1/8” (33.3 cm) x 2” (5.1 cm) deep.Description: A very large and heavy oval serving platter with an early rose medallion design that is intricately and colorfully painted. This is one of the early ones, most likely dating from before 1860. The platter has a raised cavetto and a large central area decorated with reserve panels that alternate between scenes of mandarin garden and scenes of flowers and bird. The central medallion has a bird and flower surrounded by a gold ring and a border of yellow and white butterflies. The mouth rim has gilt and iron red. The hair ornaments of the ladies are gilded. The platter has a flat unglazed and unmarked base. MEASUREMENTS 16 ½” (41.9 cm) x 13 1/8” (33.3 cm) x 2” (5.1 cm) deep. Weighs 5 lbs 0.5 oz (2290 g) CONDITION There are no cracks or breaks. There is a chip on the rim, with most of the chip is on the underside. There are enamel chips. Most are on the women’s blue dresses. There is wear to the gilt on the rim and on the central medallion gilt ring. The glazes are still fresh and bright. There are kiln flaws like bumps, black spots, and pin hole reserves. A very large decorative platter to add to a collection or add color to the home. This a very early rose medallion piece.
