Porfirio Salinas was a Mexican-American painter known for his impressionistic landscapes. Some of his most admired works, including Bluebonnets, depict blooms of wildflowers in the Texas scrubland. Born on November 6, 1910 in Bastrop, TX to Mexican immigrant farmers, he was first exposed to art after leaving school to work at a local art supply store. After meeting the painter Robert William Wood at the store, Salinas worked as Wood's studio assistant. It was in the older artistÂ’s studio where he received much of his technical training in painting. Notably, Salinas was one of President Lyndon B. Johnson's favourite artists, and his work adorned the White House foyer through his term. He was the subject of a 1962 solo exhibition at the Witte Museum in San Antonio. The artist died on April 18, 1973 in San Antonio, TX.
