Description
STAMPED "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG" PENNSYLVANIA DECORATED STONEWARE BATTER JUG, salt-glazed, approximately four quart capacity, ovoid form with open-loop handle supports, protruding spout, applied arched handle at reverse base, and Albany-slip glazed interior. Cobalt brushed floral wreath decoration below spout, drooping bell flower to reverse, and additional cobalt around supports, arched handle, and across stamp. Original wire and wooden bail handle with appropriate tin covers of undetermined age. Cowden and Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA. 1863-1881. 9" HOA, jug 7 7/8" H, 5" D rim.
Excellent, mostly undamaged condition with minor flake to interior rim. Having some manufacturing flaws including glaze imperfections to bell flower and glazed over flake to one handle support, as made.
