Antonio Pineda 'Spike' Bracelet
The silver lattice-form cuff studded with domed cabochon amethysts and silver cones, signed with maker's mark, Mexican control marks. Inner cir. 6 7/8 inches.
Antonio Pineda (b. 1919) was one of the most successful silver designers of the Taxco school during the 2nd half of the 20th century. Pineda trained with William Spratling, before setting up his own workshop in 1941. His work was well known to American audiences both through their visits to his Taxco workshop and through Gump's Department store, which was a major purveyor of his jewelry. His jewelry is defined as Mexican modernist and is characterized by dramatic angular designs. Pineda's inspiration for this cuff was a type of World War II mine planted to destroy submarines. The model is illustrated in Gobi Stromberg, Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda, 2008, p. 148 no. 19.
