He studied at Camberwell School of Art, London, and The Central School of Art, London, from 1950 to 1953. Later he was commissioned by ‘Martini’ to travel extensively in Italy for an exhibition of paintings inspired by the Italian landscape. At this point he began a journey which continued for more than thirty years. Ash moved from country to country, living from his painting as he travelled, stopping for six months here, two years there. He maintained a special interest in the country of Cezanne and Van Gogh, but also frequently visited further East, many of his most celebrated paintings were made in Turkey and Cyprus. John Ash’s new Post-impressionism is now well known to art collectors all over the world. His work depicts vivid French and Italian landscapes; quiet harmonious country house interiors; cafes and terraces, where groups of friends gather over a quiet cafe, or tea and cakes; laughing children playing in cornfields; a curled and purring ginger cat asleep on a period armchair, (this is often John’s own cat and his own favorite chair); ballet dancers at ballet school; the variety of his interests make an extensive subject list that marks out a typical John Ash painting.
