View of the Russian-built fort in Northern California. Alphonse Sondag (1873-1971) came to San Francisco from France as a child, returning to Paris at age 17 to study at Ecole des Beaux Arts for three years. Back in California he continued his long career as an artist, and is most notable for his paintings of missions, adobes, the Mother Lode country and other historic spots in northern California. The painting was acquired by the current owner from the estate of Bill Burger.
