Lithographed map. 18.8x24.3 cm (7½x9½") on sheet 20.7x25.3 cm (8¼x10").
Very rare lettersheet version of the map issued in James H. Carson's Recollections of the Mines, not in the Clifford lettersheet collection. The map extends from the Cosumes river above Stockton at about 38º 25' N. south to below Rio de los Reyes or nearly to 36º N. The Bay of Monterey is at lower left, the city of Stockton dominates the center, at at the right is the Sierra Nevada range. The many gold rush towns that had sprung up are named, including Mariposa, Jacksonville, Jamestown, Sonora, Columbia, Carson's Hill, Mokelumne Hill, Jackson, and many others. The rivers, creeks and streams are shown and named, as well as the roads, with mileage indicated. With early, if not the earliest, appearance of Yosemite on a map ("Yose mity"). An important map of great rarity. Baird 150; Wheat Gold Region 218.
