Description
This large quality framed oil on Masonite from November 1939 is by listed Wisconsin artist Paul Lewis Clemens and depicts Milwaukee author, philanthropist, and William George Bruce. Milwaukee artist Clemens was known for his early career focusing on sports related art. He then switched to portraiture, painting this portait in November 1939. In 1940 he moved to California and became a portraitist to the Hollywood elite, painting Katherine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, and Nancy Reagen, among others. Bruce was an author, chronicling the early days of Milwaukee and also a big proponant of the Milwaukee Auditorium (1909), the Milwaukee Harbor Commission, and Historical Society, and connected to the Milwaukee Public Library and Museum. In Good condition, with a couple of slight scrapes, and signed in the lower left corner, it measures 53.5" tall X 44" across.
