Description
A Mount Hagen Area Ceremonial Axe Papua New Guinea, early 20th century The large axe with an attractive gray-green hardstone blade, finely crafted and polished, secured with intricately plaited rattan binding, a blade-shaped wood counterweight at the opposing end, both affixed to a tapering wood handle. The wood blade has a geometric pattern of triangles carved on one side. In very good condition, probably original as collected, the blade securely attached, the intricate rattan binding and tapering wood handle have a dark brown to black patina from extensive handling. Provenance: Collected by Valentine Pasvolsky of Lakewood, NJ between 1930-1970 Length: 24 ¾ inches
