South Asia, India, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pair of hand-carved wooden chairs with squat legs, flat backs with incised designs, flexible seats made from crosshatched strips of rattan, and a pair of lathe-turned balusters. The shorter chair has a larger seat back adorned with a series of 4 quatrefoil motifs, while intricate leafy patterns adorn the sides. The taller chair has a more-petite back that is adorned with a central tondo of a multi-petalled flower surrounded by vegetal decoration. The legs and balusters of both feature dozens of slender rings and each exhibits a lovely slender strand of rattan tied to the tops of their backs. Rich patina envelops both chairs and imbues them with a finely aged presentation. Size (of larger): 18.25" L x 16.25" W x 29.5" H (46.4 cm x 41.3 cm x 74.9 cm)

Both have a few areas of loss to rattan fibers on peripheries and miniscule loss to interior rattan. Larger has had repair to seat and back with possible restoration. Possible repair and restoration to back of smaller. Both have a few minor nicks and abrasions, commensurate with age and use. Stable natural hairline fissures to wood on both and some loosening of back and seat attachment. Otherwise, both are excellent with nice patina.
