Description
Chinese mother of pearl letter box, c.1900
The dimensions are 31.25" tall x 17.5" wide x 7.75" deep
Davids notes: A museum piece really. I have never seen mother of pearl carving this good. The dogs(or shishi as they are often known)are wonderfully carved and playful, in the abstract mythical world of floating trees and clouds, there are also auspicious bats and scholars inlaid into the wood.
Purpose is unknown, it might have been a letter box or glove holder in Hong Kong at the end of the 19th century, meant for the entrance of a home.
