Item Details
Description
Fine Roman style micromosaic of sea serpent rider
Mosaic: 13.5" x 8.5"
Frame: 16.75" x 11.5"

Davids notes:A beautiful and fine micro mosaic of a Roman style plaque depicting a 'horse mermaid', a mythical creature with the head of a horse, a serpent tale and lion paws. Probably created in the 1940's or 1950's, the workmanship which has been carried over from generation to generation in Italy is almost unreproducible. The only country that has come close to mimicking the Italians is the Indians, and they tend to due non Greek/Roman subjects. This is definitely from one of the great mosaic workshops of Florence or Rome, which still produce masterpieces today. They tend to be prohibitively expensive, and rarely turn up on the open market. This is the 2nd one I have seen in 30 years.
