Bamana (Bambara) Chiwara female carved wood ceremonial headdress, Mali, late 19th/early 20th century, the cimier crest depicting a rare double oryx antelope heads around a female standing figure, decorated with applied metal and shell. 39.75” H x 14” W x 5” D Note: The Chiwara society uses masks, as well as dances and rituals associated primarily with agriculture, to teach social values as well as agricultural techniques.
