Probably Hopewell culture, Ohio, a platform pipe surmounted by a rattlesnake coiled around the bowl, its head with a bird in its mouth, carved out of a grey pipestone with amber mottling
h. 2-3/8 w. 4-1/8 d. 1-3/4 in.
Provenance: Ralph T. Coe (1929-2010), noted collector, curator, and scholar of Native American art; by descent to his brother-in-law, William D. Wixom, former curator and Chairman of the Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the estate of William D. Wixom, Pawling, NY
