Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. A beautiful multi-stranded necklace strung with dozens of faience beads with a molded, baboon-shaped amulet in the center. The two-stranded composition features tubular and seed-form beads that are glazed in hues of blue, beige, tan, turquoise, slate, and ash gray, with the innermost strand hanging just above the outermost strand. Centered on the innermost strand is a blue-glaze amulet depicting the seated baboon form of Thoth, the god of mathematics, learning, writing, and the moon. Capped with a modern silver-plated box clasp, this is an attractive ensemble meant to be proudly worn! Size (Thoth amulet): 0.375" W x 0.6" H (1 cm x 1.5 cm); (outermost strand): 21.5" L (54.6 cm)

Wearable as shown and strung in modern times. Faience beads and amulet are ancient, and stringing and silver-plated box clasp are modern. Minor nicks, abrasions, and fading to glaze on some beads, with light encrustations to beads and amulet, and softening to some finer details of baboon amulet, otherwise intact and very good. Wonderful preservation to glaze coloration.
