Description
**First Time At Auction**
Western/Central Europe, late Medieval Period, ca. 15th century CE. A mold-cast lead ampulla of a condensed size with a circular body, a compressed neck, and a pair of petite handles. The front of the vessel features a raised shield motif with a crosshatched crucifix inside, and the verso bears a broad, circular flower with 8 elongated petals. Ampullae like this example were brought back with pilgrims from a holy site and were typically filled with holy water from a shrine. Size: 1.3" W x 2" H (3.3 cm x 5.1 cm)
Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000

Condition
Neck is compressed on both sides as shown. Minor nicks to rim, with softening to some motifs on each side, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina throughout.
