Ancient Seas, United States, Wyoming, Lincoln County, Green River Formation, Eocene Period, ca. 56 to 33.9 Million years ago. A wonderful group of 5 prehistoric Knightia fish fossilized within a large stone matrix! The fish have developed a caramel brown hue during the fossilization process, and their spines, fins, and the distinctive curved line of the operculum gill cover, are well preserved. Knightia are an extinct species of freshwater fish that resembled modern day herrings or sardines.
