Photographers: William Henry Towles (American, 1871-1954) and Clarence Oscher Towles (1866-1937). Photograph of Princess Margaret Draper Boncompagni, 1913. A charming antique photograph of a Princess Margaret Draper Boncompagni who was an American heiress married to an Italian Prince druing the 1920s. Here she wears a luxurious fur coat and a fancy hat decorated with feathers befitting her lavish lifestyle. The photograph is signed "Towles / 13" and is set in an attractive frame from her era. Size: 6.875" W x 9" H (17.5 cm x 22.9 cm); 10.75" W x 12.75" H (27.3 cm x 32.4 cm) framed

William Henry Towles and brother Clarence Oscher Towles were major photographers of their time, known for their cabinet cards. The brothers won many awards and served as officers in photographer associations. The Towles Studio was located in several American cities around the turn of the 19th century. Most works were signed Towles without specifying which brother shot the image. According to one account, William H. Towles actually owned all of the equipment used by the famous Civil War photographer Mathew Brady who died in 1896.

Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.

Photographic print has not been examined outside the frame but appears to be in good condition. Paper shows expected slight toning. Gallery paper on verso of the frame is torn around periphery. Wired for suspension.
