Description
NANTUCKET LIGHTSHIP BASKET BY DAVIS HALL
Late 19th Century
Round, with two fixed handles. Retains original label.
Height inclusive of handles 5". Diameter 10”.
Provenance:
The Estate of Sandra L. Moran of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts.

Notes:
Davis Hall (1828-1906) was the son of a mariner who died around the time of his birth. His mother remarried in 1840 and the family moved to Nantucket sometime that decade. Davis sailed on Gold Rush clippers in the late 1840s and worked on lifeboats in the 1850s and 1860s before joining the Union Army during the Civil War. He retired with injuries from a gunshot wound and chronic illnesses and returned to Nantucket, where he took a job on the South Shoal Lightship and cultivated his basket making. He is known to have developed the oval form of lightship baskets.
