A SET OF SIX ITALIAN MID-19TH CENTURY VOLUMES OF GRAND TOUR PLASTER INTAGLIOS
Probably made by Pietro Paoletti (Rome, 1801-1847)
The leather and gilt tooled spines titled Dolce Gemme Antichi and enclosing a large collection of plaster casts of engraved cameos, sculptures and monuments with an opposing hand written catalogue of contents,
22cm wide x 3.5cm deep x 34cm high, (8 1/2in wide x 1in deep x 13in high) (6)
Footnotes:
The Paoletti's studio was located on the Piazza di Spagna in Rome until 1847 and enjoyed an excellent reputation throughout the 'Grand Tour'. They counted among their clients Catherine the Great of Russia, Ferdinand III and Grand Duke of Tuscany. The firm continued to do business after the death of Pietro until at least 1865.
Examples of the Paolettis' casts are conserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut.
