A VIBRANT FLEMISH RELIGIOUS TAPESTRY
17th century
depicting the story of The Annunciation of St. Anne, the figure of Joachim, tenderly embracing Anne at the ancient city gate, in the walls of Jerusalem to the left of the main field, the background showing a rustic landscape, the whole within elaborate fruiting foliate borders, bearing the mark of Willem De Pannemaker and Brussels mark 269cm x 211cm
Footnotes:
The weaving dynasty of de Pannemaker were originally from the Southern Netherlands. Pieter de Pannemaker (Fl.1517 -32) operated from Brussels, the main centre for tapestry weaving in Europe at the time. The Pennemakers were well celebrated for over a century and enjoyed the patronage of a number of Royal European houses including the Habsburgs. Their tapestries were typically resplendent with gold and silver threads.
