Description
A Federal Cherrywood Corner Cupboard
Probably New England or Ohio, Circa 1800
Height 82 x width 56 x depth 26 inches.
Property from the Estate of Thomas Huntington Hubbard, Ashtabula, Ohio
Provenance:
Probably acquired by Nehemiah Hubbard, Middletown, Connecticut, or William Hubbard, Ashtabula, Ohio;
thence by descent to the present owner
Note:
Nehemiah Hubbard was a prominent banker and merchant of eighteenth-century Middletown who served as Quartermaster General to George Washington. The Hubbard family were early settlers in Connecticut, and Nehemiah Hubbard's house, built in 1745, remains a private residence but is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
Nehemiah Hubbard's nephew, William Hubbard, settled in Ohio in 1834 following the 1795 re-division of land in the Ohio Territory. His house, built in late 1840, was saved from demolition in 1979 by Thomas Huntington Hubbard, and is now the Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum, Ashtabula, Ohio.
