Listed on p. 23 as A Candlestick circa 1939 Collection of Mrs. Matt T. Donahue@ in Brilliance in Glass, The Lost Wax Glass Sculpture of Frederick Carder by Paul Hollister(1993), a publication in conjunction with the Exhibition from Aug. 13, 1993 through Jan. 9, 1994 at The Rockwell Museum in Corning, NY.
See. P. 144 of Grover for background on Electra. Actually, the famous illustrator Maxfield Parrish for many years prepared illustrations for the Edison Division of General Electric to promote Mazda brand electric bulbs. The figure Electra was created by Parrish for advertising produced yearly, and incorporated or adapted into this piece to honor Thomas Alva Edison.
Provenance relayed by James N. Donahue, son of Mrs. Matt T. Donahue, is that this pair of candlesticks was produced for use at a dinner in 1939 honoring Thomas Alva Edison, which coincided with the 60th anniversary of the invention of the light bulb. One of the pair disappeared and this is the surviving piece.
