**First Time At Auction**
Western Europe, France, Late Medieval period, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A remarkable hand-carved marble mortar with a flat base, a gradually widening conical body, four rounded integral handles or lugs equidistantly spaced around the perimeter, and a deep grinding cavity. The smooth body of this ancient vessel displays mottled hues of cool grey and chalky white. A splendid and sizeable example from Medieval Europe! Size: 9.875" in Diameter x 5.5" H (25.1 cm x 14 cm)
Provenance: ex-private Sarasota, Florida, USA collection, acquired before 1965
