**First Time At Auction**
North Pacific, Hawaii, Pre-Contact Era, ca. 17th century CE. A splendid and sizeable stone pestle displaying a thick, round pounding head and a lengthy body that tapers to a petite, hemispherical handle. Hand-carved from porous basalt, this hefty implement would have likely been used to pounding kava root to make the psychoactive beverage called kava or 'awa in Hawaiian. Known to produce sedative, anesthetic, and euphoriant properties, kava has been consumed for centuries by Polynesians and Hawaiians and is commonly used as a ceremonial beverage. Size: 3" in diameter x 11.75" H (7.6 cm x 29.8 cm)
