South America, Peru, Chinchero, ca. 1950s CE. A beautiful wool poncho, handwoven by the weavers of Chinchero, a village outside Cusco, renowned for their traditional textiles and stunning patterns! The poncho is constructed from two separate rectangular panels that are stitched together along their long edges, with an opening left in the center for the wearerÂ’s head to fit through. The embroidery around the neck has a nice triangle shaped detail that is positioned at the front. The pattern of the weaving consists of red, blue, green, yellow, and white symmetrical stripes placed evenly across both panels. The fringe along the hem and neck opening is a repeating diamond motif. The skill of the weaver is evident; and the tightly woven threads and heavy wool will certainly keep the chill off!
