Description
PORTER, Cole (1891–1964). A massive archive from the Clifton Webb estate. Includes numerous autograph manuscript sheet music including “Now or Never” possibly signed by Cole Porter, “Alone Together”, “Easter Bonnet”, “Glamor”, “Sleepy Time Down South”, and many others all in an unknown hand; large envelope from Edmund Goulding to Webb containing printed sheet music; a typed letter signed by Chappell & Co. to Clifton Webb who were instructed by Cole Porter to send a copy of “Missus Lowsborough Goodby” to Webb (included); a large archive of estate documents related to Webb including list of assets, safety deposit box contents, appraisals, birth certificates, etc. Provenance: purchased from Helen Ruth Matthews Dalrymble who was the secretary of Clifton Webb. Webb and Porter had a working relationship for many years. In 1916, Webb performed in Porter’s comic opera “See America First” and in the 1920s Webb starred in several Broadway shows that included original songs by Porter.
