BIOGRAPHY:
Daniel Beard was a naturalist, artist, and illustrator who was born in 1850, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He trained at the Art Students League in New York City, and ultimately became the editor of Recreation magazine. His greatest focus was illustrating scenes of outdoor life.He taught animal drawing from 1893 to 1900, and founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, the first scouting society for boys, which later merged with the Boy Scouts of America. He later become the Boy Scouts national commissioner, and became known to boys all over the country as "Uncle Dan.Beard is credited with authoring many handbooks on scouting and camping, including Shelters, Shacks, and Shanties, Wisdom of the Woods, American Boys Handy Book (1882, 1903), Boy Pioneers and Sons of Daniel Boone (1909), Do It Yourself (1925), and the first edition of Mark Twain's Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court. In 1939, Beard published his autobiography, Hardly a Man is Now Alive.Mt. Beard, which is located adjacent to Mt. McKinley, is named for Daniel Beard.
