Twelve-Piece Neo-Renaissance Oak Dining Suite

fourth quarter 19th century, comprised of a sideboard, h. 88", w. 88", d. 31", a server, h. 38", w. 48", d. 21", a banquet table with four leaves, h. 31", w. 58", l. 62-1/2", ext. l. 122", a china cabinet, h. 75", w. 62-1/2", d. 23", a suite of eight dining chairs, including a pair of armchairs, h. 54-1/4", and six side chairs, h. 45-1/2", all robustly carved in grape, leaf, vine and fruit motifs, the sideboard with a front basket crest flanked by grapes, leaves and vines, over a pair of shelves, each backed by panels in similar decor, the base with two drawers over two doors, flanked by curved sides, with paneled doors, all robustly fruit-carved, the dining table with vintage-carved and double-knuckled paw feet, the china cabinet with glazed doors and sides and five adjustable shelves, the three-tier server with a pair of drawers, the dining chairs carved in the Renaissance Revival taste.


Provenance: Property Descended in the Livaudais-Walshe Family, New Orleans, Louisiana.

The set is in "as found" condition. The table has old dings and scuffs to the top. Some rubs along the aprons from the armchair arms. Three of the four leaves have separated along their glued seams. One leaf is still intact. The runners may need some attention and adjustments to slide smoothly. The sideboard has an open shrinkage crack to the top deck along a glued seam. Another separation crack at the front left corner of the deck. The support columns and brackets are missing from the underside of each of the upper shelves. There is shrinkage and separations to the mitered corners of the base molding. The china cabinet has minor scuffs and dings. The doors drag slightly. The server is in overall good condition. The crest on one of the armchairs has been broken and glued back on. Old breaks, cracks and small carving losses throughout on the other chairs. The backs on two of the side chairs are loose. The others are sturdy. The upholstery is soiled and worn. The set retains its original dark stained finish. The finish is dry throughout and shows scattered areas of wear. By all accounts, all of the components to this suite of furniture are original to the set. The sideboard measures 88" wide.
