Flemish Primitives is the historiographic denomination for the masters of the Flemish school of painting in its initial centuries.Within Flemish painting there are several schools: the Italianist and the reactionary during the 15th to 16th centuries, in addition to the naturalist or colorist school of the Antwerp School of the 17th century.The first two refer to the painting of the Netherlands that emerged within the European Renaissance. They were formed by a group of artists relatively isolated from the Renaissance revolution and some, like the reactionary school, opposed to Italianizing influences.They still retained features of the Gothic style, technical, such as the use of panel instead of canvas, and thematic, especially religious and spiritual. However, their detailed ability and interests led them to investigate and empirically discover perspective, to perfect the technique of portraiture, which they endowed with great psychological depth, and to reclaim landscape as a pictorial theme.The scene takes place inside a cave or natural shelter that opens to the background of a landscape illuminated by a twilight. The body of Christ, supported by Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, is introduced into a tomb, and around it are grouped several characters, among which Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary stand out for their expressiveness.The treatment of Christ's anatomy is perfect, moreover, he is the central focus due to the contrast of color between the shining white of the body with the clothing of the rest of the characters, which are composed of silky qualities.
