Description
A large Middle Assyrian smocky quartz cylinder seal.
Middle Assyrian Period, c. 1400 - 1100 BCE.
Dimension: 2.9x1.5cm.
The design features a mythological hunting scene. A mustached hero or god wearing a tunic, goes down on one knee, pulling a bow and aiming at a recumbent lion-griffin. The lion-griffin has the head and body of a lion and the hind and talon of a bird. It's running away from the hero with its head turning back, roaring at him. An uncertain symbol with zizag lines is below the neck of the monster, and above it, a six-point star and a crescent moon. The whole composition reminds of the mythological scene of a war god hunting the monster Imudugud (Anzu bird), which is also represented on a relief from the Nimrud palace.
Private Peking collection formed around 2000.
