Description
Gold mounted cylindrical shagreen case containing a vellum document discussing the plight of Mr. William Hay and his struggles for a cure or relief from kidney stones. Mr. Hay (1695-1755) was a Whig Member of Parliament who urged that his body be left to science, so that his condition could be further studied. He wanted the proof of his affliction left to the famous collector Hans Sloane, from whom it then passed to Royal College of Surgeons. According to an article entitled, "Curiosities from the collection of Calculi, in the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons, by Alexander Randall" : "The Calculus is mounted between glasses in a gold frame, on which is engraved: "this stone weighs 99 grains," and this is enclosed in a gold box. It was also accompanied by a manuscript on vellum in a gold-mounted shagreen case." The case is 13.5"L and 1.25" Dia. with the "WH" and the date "1755" engraved on gold plaque. PROVENANCE: The Englishman's Antiques, Addison, Texas. Circa - 1755.
