Description
This high-relief, 5-1/4-inch galvano-negative was designed in 1942 by sculptor Gaetano Cecere (1984-1985) for a medal distributed by the Supply Store of The Cooper Union in New York City. The final squarish medals were 5/8-inch across and bear the portrait of founder David Cooper and the 1859 date when it was founded. See other galvano items in this auction for details on Medallic Art Company and how this was made. It is extremely rare for items like this to appear on the market, and it probably surfaced after the 2016 bankruptcy of Northwest Territorial Mint which had purchased Medallic Art Company in 2009. Approx 8 inches in diameter and weighs about 13 ounces. It is thinner than many other galvanos and the emblem square is separating from the surrounding copper circle on three sides.Date: 1942Country (if not USA): State: New YorkCity: New York CityProvenance:
