Description
Lot of 5 medals commemorating the SS Great Eastern, the largest iron sailing steamship built when launched in 1858. She carried passengers between England and the US before being converted in 1866 to lay the first transatlantic telegraph cable. (1) 1860: Great Eastern Steamship souvenir medal by George Lovett. Obverse view of the steamship arriving from the dock. The reverse indicates it was sold on board and lists the physical dimensions of the ship. Copper, 32mm, EF, some carbon spots.
