Description
This is a galvano-positive made by Medallic Art Company for the 25th anniversary of National Cash Register in 1946. The design would have been identified as MACo 1946-041. No artist name is recorded with this design. Medallic Art Company was incorporated in New York City 1910 and produced medallic work of exceptionally high quality and design into the present day. In the first half of the 20th century, medallic models would be sculpted from wax, clay, or plaster and made into a plaster positive. This plaster positive would be sprayed with an electrically conductive material and electrolytically plated with a heavy layer of pure copper to produce a copper negative called a galvano. This was placed on a Janvier mechanical pantograph machine that would cut the negative pattern into a soft steel block which would later be hardened into a die that would produce the medallion in a hydraulic or mechanical press. The item in this lot is a galvano-positive made by plating the galvano-negative with a heavy layer of copper to make a galvano-positive. It could be cut out, plated in gold, silver, or brass, and used as an ornament on a award or decorative item. It is extremely rare for items like this to appear on the market, and it probably surfaced after the 2016 bankruptcy of Northwest Territorial Mint which had purchased Medallic Art Company in 2009. Approx 5 x 5 x 0.5 inches, and includes the original electrode wire still attached. 314.5 grams.Date: 1946Country (if not USA): State: City: Provenance:
