Item Details
Description
4th century BC-2nd century AD. A mixed group of mainly tanged iron arrows and bolts comprising leaf, triangular, conical, trilobate, barbed and other profiles. For triangular barbed examples see BM, accession no.1999,1010.2, from Roman Gaul; for bodkin shape and other similar arrowheads used during the 1st-2nd century Jewish wars by the Roman army see Stiebel G.D., Armis et litteris, the military equipment of early Roman Palestine, in light of archaeological and historical sources, London, 2007, pls. III.5A-B-C. 350 grams total, 3.8-11.6cm (1 1/2 - 4 1/2"). From the Abelita family collection, acquired in London, UK, 1980-2015. Arrows of this type were widely used in the Hellenistic and Mediterranean Armies since 4th century BC. Bodkin-shaped arrowheads were intended to pass through shields and armour. The wide barbed bladed-head, with its sharp edges, posed a dire threat to the victim's health, causing haemorrhage, shock and infection. Many examples of iron tanged trilobate arrowheads have been found in the debris of Gamala's siege, belonging to the Levantine archers of the Roman Army sieging the city in 67 AD. Hellenistic armies favoured bronze barbed arrowheads. [30]
