Item Details
Description
1st-4th century AD. A group of military fittings comprising: a hinged strap fitting and a plate fragment with flat round washers from a lorica segmentata and other two possible fragments of armour; a belt fitting with pelta-shaped cut-outs; a belt stud for fastening of the scabbard of a pugio. See Bishop, M., Lorica Segmentata, A Handbook of Articulated Roman Plate Armour, volume I, London, 2002, fig. 4.3 no 8, Appels, A. & Laycock, S., Roman Buckles & Military Fittings, Witham, Essex, 2007, p.75, fig.AA8.28; Bishop, M.C. & Coulston, J.C.N., Roman Military Equipment From the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome, London, 1993, fig.42, 59 no.21. 66 grams total, 22-48mm (1 -2"). From a North Yorkshire collection formed since the 1980s; thence by descent. Imperial Roman military equipment was highly standardised. However there were several variants of the same military kits, like the hinges and claps of the famous Lorica Segmentata. The pugio's scabbard fitting finds correspondence with specimens from the Rhine region [7, No Reserve]
