A pair of irregular fragmentary brick tiles with the inscriptions 'L XIIII G (M?)' for Legio Quarta Decima Gemina Martia [et Victrix] (The Twinned Fourteenth Legion Martial and Victorious) and 'L X G P' for Legio Decima Gemina Pia (FIdelis) (The Twins' Tenth Legion faithful and loyal"). Cf. Beutler, F., Farka, C., Gugl, C., Humer, F., Kremer, G., Polhammer, E. (ed.), Der Adler Roms, Carnuntum und die Armee der Caesaren, Bad Voslau, 2017, pp.217-218, nos.147-148. 800 grams total, 11-14cm (4 1/2 - 5 1/2"). From a North Yorkshire collection formed since the 1980s; thence by descent. The camp of the Legio XIIII was in Carnuntum (Pannonia) from the 2nd to the 5th century AD, various detachments (vexillationes) of the Legion operated in various provinces of the huge Roman Empire: for example Britannia, Germania Superior and even at Zeugma, on the borders between Syria Coele and Osroene. The main camp of the Legio X Gemina was Vindobona (Pannonia) since 103 AD, but detachments operated all around the Empire, like in Mušov (today Bohemia) and Apamea (Syria"). [2, No Reserve]
