Description
A Carved wooden mask with heavy domed forehead, large nose and slightly puckered mouth. The entire mask shows great wear and handling suggesting years of field use as a ceremonial object. Elu masks, such as this one, are danced by young members of secret men’s societies that have social, religious, or governmental functions. The small masks are attached to cone-shaped caps of fiber and cloth that cover the heads of the dancers. They are usually danced at annual festivals or at funerals of members of the societies. The mask was painted red with a mineral pigment and measures 7 x 5.25 inches ( 11.25 on professional custom display stand) Provenance: Ex- Lavina Tackberry collection, Eye On Design Gallery 1993, Ill.
