Hy Vogel, born 1900 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, was a successful mixed media artist in Detroit, Michigan, who created portraits of movie stars, the famous elite as well as clown paintings. His caricatures feature Jimmy Durante, Gary Cooper, Tallulah Bankhead, Jimmy Stewart, Bob Hope, Hebert Marshall, and Alfred Hitchcock, Ed Wynn, Susan Hayward, Edward G. Robinson, Danny Thomas, Judy Garland. Vogel was the resident artist at the famous London Chop House in Detroit Michigan from when it opened in 1938 until it closed its doors in 1991, painting aforementioned celebrities at that location. Though he never had an art lesson, most of his life had been spent with a sketch pad & charcoal. He sketched the famous for a living, but his first love was clowns, and it earned him a life-time pass to Ringling Brothers Circus. As Hy was fond of saying, ‘There’s a little bit of clown in everyone”.
