Description
A Fine Old Kuba Bwoom mask embellished with various seeds and beads, animal hide ( now decayed) and hand hammered copper sheet. The bwoom is one of three types of royal Kuba masks, all of which are treated as embodiments of nature spirits (mingesh). According to one local interpretation, the bwoom mask represents a prince who suffered from a neurological condition that caused his head to swell with accumulated fluid. Another says that bwoom is the image of one of the original Twa (Pygmy) inhabitants of the region. The Mask itself measures 14 x 9 inches, without the hanging regalia. Provenance: Ex. Sol and Josephine Levitt, NY; Ex. Alfred Schienberg, NY prior to 1985. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00
Condition
fair, weathered, animal hide now void of hair.
