Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished blackware pottery jar displaying 3 registers of protruding maize ears. The hemispherical vessel presents with a round but stable base, a gently sloped shoulder bearing the all-important ears of maize, a pair of arching loop handles, and a projecting spout. A stylized anthropomorphic face on the spout is illustrated with almond-shaped eyes, deep nasolabial folds, full lips, and perky ears, all beneath a 'crown' that doubles as the spout rim. Size: 8" Diameter x 7.8" H (20.3 cm x 19.8 cm)
Provenance: ex Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA, donated to Ashland University between July 1994 to December 1998

Condition
Lower body repaired from several large pieces, with small areas of restoration along the shoulder, and resurfacing with overpainting along new material and break lines. Minor abrasions to body, maize ears, and face, with fading to areas of dark color. Great preservation to overall form of maize ears and spout face.
