Item Details
Description
This lot consists of an unframed acrylic painting on canvas, rendered in the abstract expressionist style of Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956). This dynamic image depicts a many-layered collage of organic line. A tumbling inferno of red, black, yellow, and white laces across itself countless times; this is a veritable feast for the eyes. Hand painted inscription at lower right corner reads, "Jackson Pollock". Lot 61 is a handsome painting that would be a highlight to any modern art collector's gallery. Canvas dimensions approximately 20" x 28".

Reverse side features a number of stamps, inscriptions, and labels.

At top edge of frame, an affixed paper label reads, "Pollock, J., Untitled. CONS-82-64". Remnants of other paper labels are visible, as well as the imprinted logo of renowned easel/art supply company, Anco Bilt. A handwritten inscription at top left reads, "# 26".

All other sides of the frame feature the Anco Bilt logo, as well as two ink stamps (bottom center) that read, "Art of this Century. 30 West 57th Street. New York, N.Y.", one handwritten insignia (right center), and one intriguing paper label which is attached to the reverse side of the canvas itself. This label reads as follows:

"First exhibition. JACKSON POLLOCK. Paintings and Drawings. November 9-27. Preview Monday Nov. 8. 4 to 6. 30 West 57. New York." Vertically, at left, is the title of the exhibition: "Art of this Century".

Jackson Pollock (American, 1912-1956) was a hugely prolific artist of the mid-20th century, whose "drip painting" (sometimes called "action painting") broke ground for countless artists - from Helen Frankenthaler to Morris Louis, Frank Stella, and many others. He was deeply influenced by the writings of Carl Jung, the paintings of Janet Sobel, and the indigenous art of North America. Today, Pollock's work lives on in a blaze of legend, movement, and critical debate. This was exactly his intention.

Pollock's wife, the artist Lee Krasner, once offered an anecdote that seems to say it all: "Pollock used to give his pictures conventional titles ... but now he simply numbers them. Numbers are neutral. They make people look at a picture for what it is, a pure painting."
