Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a bronze sculpture, done in the sleek and modern style of Loet Vanderveen (Hollander, 1921-2015). This statuette portrays the figure of a majestic elephant, its head bowed, ears relaxed. Hand inscription below the elephant's tail (above its rear feet) reads, "LOET (c) 212/2500." This sophisticated piece stands approximately 3.75" tall, is about 2" wide, and 4.5" long.
Loet Vanderveen (Hollander, 1921-2015) was a huge lover of animals and the natural world. Vanderveen grew up in Rotterdam and took refuge in England during the chaos and upheaval of World War II, during which time Holland was occupied by Nazi forces. Vanderveen went on to live in Zurich, London, and New York, where he worked as a fashion designer and eventually a sculptor. Vanderveen's use of tasteful patinas and smooth forms have made his sculptural work a favorite of collectors the world over.
